STEVEN SODERBERGH: His biopic of Che Guevara recouped half its budget and his Brad Pitt-starring baseball film was pulled five days before the shoot began. The director of Traffic and Erin Brockovich tells The Guardian why he might just disappear.

CELEBRITY FACE-LIFTS: Not exactly an ad for face-lifts, either.

GLOBAL WARMING: Could the best climate models all be wrong? Maybe so, says a new study published online today in the journal Nature Geoscience.

SONIC YOUTH: Thurston Moore talks to the Seattle Times about leaving Geffen, his solo LPs, loving records and much more...

TINY VIPERS: Jesy Fortino talks to the Seattle Times about how the landscape around her childhood home in Issaquah influenced her music.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Bruno lounges atop the box office with 30.4 million, which is good but not great.  Universal paid 42.5 million upfront without seeing a script; Bruno will probably gross somewhere around 100 mill.  But for comparison, The Hangover had a 45 million opening.  Ice Age 3 kept the second slot making 28.5 on a mere 31 percent drop, it has grossed 120.6 million domestically so far on a 90 million budget.  Next week Harry Potter likely will hit these dinosaurs like an asteroid.  Transformers 2 drops 43 percent, but it's second fastest film of all time to reach 300 million here, while making about the same in the foreign markets.  Public Enemies drops a slightly larger-than-expected 44 percent, making 14.1 million in the fourth slot. Mann, Depp & Co may have a hard time making back its budget in the US, but Universal retained the foreign rights.  The Proposal rounds out the Top Five, with a lsight 18 percent drop that shows the power of counter-programming.  Bullock & Reynolds have raked in 113,7 million on a 40 million budget.  Below the fold, I Love You, Beth Cooper opened in seventh with five million, and will be lucky to make back its 18 million budget.

MICHAEL JACKSON: La Toya reveals that she suspects Jacko was murdered. Investigators have not ruled out homicide in his death.  Jackson's corpse had the hallmarks of longtime intravenous drug use, including arms riddled with needle marks and collapsed veins, say sources familiar with the medical examiner's preliminary findings. A doctor who treated Michael Jackson claimed the singer self-injected Demerol into his system, but that seems to be the tip of the needle. Jacko's body is being held at the crypt of Motown founder Berry Gordy. According to a friend of Jackson, the famous sequined white glove was really used to cloak the early stages of his skin disease.

Rupert Grint says kissing Watson onscrees was "a very weird kind of experience."

RYAN REYNOLDS has landed the coveted role of "Green Lantern," getting the starring role in Warner Bros.' live-action film based on the DC Comics hero. This is his third super-hero, iirc.

WHO WATCHES THE WATCHMEN? Superman and Batman took on New York's Finest in an epic Crossroads of the World battle that left the Caped Crusader in cuffs.

PAKISTAN: Spokesman Mullah Omar claimed the Swat Taliban's leaders are safe and said they went underground at the onset of the Malakand operation. THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

... with DISCO DEMOLITION NIGHT! This Sunday marks the 30th anniversary of the anniversary of Disco Demolition Night, a promo event occurring during a scheduled twi-nite doubleheader between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers that would prove to be the most ill-conceived promotional idea since the infamous "Ten Cent Beer Night" in Cleveland in 1974. Though some incorrectly think it had to do with racism, homophobia, etc., the event had much more to do with the fact that Chicago radio station WDAI forced out morning host Steve Dahl on Chirstmas Eve 1978, to switch to a disco format. A man who is cashiered wearing a Santa suit tends to carry a grudge. Dahl re-surfaced at WLUP with "Do You Think I'm Disco?" -- a parody of Rod Stewart's "Do You Think I'm Sexy?" with lyrics that targeted yuppie narcissism and materialism. He also did a bit where he pretended to blow-up disco records, which Mike Veeck, the son of Sox owner (and legendary showman) Bill Veeck, thought could be turned into a promotion whereby admission was 98 cents (because WLUP was FM 98) for anyone who brought a disco record to be blown up between the two games. It was far more successful and less controllable than either Dahl or Veeck imagined, with young people storming the park to enter, creating a fog of marijuana smoke in the stands, sailing records like frisbees, throwing firecrackers and ultimately storming the diamond after the scheduled demolition had concluded and Dahl was en route to the announcer's booth for the second game.  This compilation of local news coverage from the night is pretty darned good, with cameos from Bill Kurtis and Greg Gumbel.  The Chicago Tribune has a photo gallery, and interviews Dahl, with embedded video.

CUTOUT BIN: From AC/DC to Gram Parsons, from Spinal Tap to Stevie Wonder, from Thin Lizzy to Tommy Keene, plus The Hollies, Wilco, Black Joe Lewis, Wilco, Talking Heads and more  -- this Friday's fortuitous finds are streaming from the Pate page at the ol' HM.

NOW SHOWING: This weekend's wide releases are Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno, which is currently scoring 75 percent on the ol' Tomatometer; and the teen comedy I Love You, Beth Cooper, currently scoring 10 percent.

ALAN RUCK (who plays a Dad in "I Love You, Beth Cooper") was already 29 when he played Cameron Frye in 1986's "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"? Whoa.

AFGHANISTAN: The US military is sending thousands of mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicles to Afghanistan, even while a new version is being built.

IRAN: Opposition supporters defied an enormous security presence on the streets of Tehran to gather, by some estimates, in the thousands. The Lede is back on the case, too.
