MARNIE STERN decided to pay off a speeding ticket on tour by opening a kissing booth. Pics and review at the link. Then watch her hammer her axe a bit in this video for "Transformer."

SILVER JEW -- the documentary about David Berman & Co. -- is streaming this week at PitchforkTV.

ROD STEWART: The "definitive" collection is streaming this week at AOL, but is it really definitive without "Ooh La La"?

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE: Brendan Canning talks to the Tennesseean about writing his solo LP in-studio, the current state of the BSS collective, etc.

BRITNEY SPEARS has compared her new life to a jail sentence in an astonishingly candid interview.

NICOLE KIDMAN claims she may quit acting to have more kids. Of course, Jessica Alba recently said she's having a tough time as a working mom.  So maybe this has now become the thing to say, now that Angelina Jolie has said it.

JENNIFER ANISTON & JOHN MAYER were "positively glowing in the candlelight" at the Sunset Tower Hotel on Monday night.

TOM-KAT UPDATE: Putting the latest trailer for Valkyrie in front of the new James Bond movie presented its own cliffhanger for both Cruise and MGM, who bizarrely chose to have a lot riding on a movie about a Nazi assassination plot.

ASHLEE SIMPSON is so eager to finally give birth that she may induce labor, according to her pneumatic blonde sister.

PAKISTAN: The government reopened the Torkham border crossing in Khyber; paramilitary forces are escorting NATO convoys.

IRAQ: Retired Gen. Barry McCaffrey, long an Iraq skeptic, has written in a new report that the Iraq war has entered its "end game," enabling the US to bring home most of its 140000 G.I.s within three years. Iran's parliament speaker urged Iraqi lawmakers to keep resisting a security pact with the US, official media said Tuesday. The head of the Anbar Awakening Council says that it is now the time for Iraq to become a strategic ally of the US.

PENGUIN vs. KILLER WHALES: Head for the lifeboat!

JONESTOWN: The mass cult suicide occurred 30 years ago today, as recalled by Tim Reiterman, who was shot while escaping the People's Temple compound in Guyana. So it seems like the moment for the Vapors' "Jimmie Jones."

NEW RELEASES: Belle & Sebastian, Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan, Tom Jones, The Doors and more have albums streaming in full this week via Spinner.

BRITISH SEA POWER puts Guitar Hero and Wii Music through their paces for the Times of London.

THE DECEMBERISTS: A new song, "Record Year," and a video interview with Colin Meloy are posted at SPIN.

THE PERMANENT REVOLUTION: More than 30 years after punk took the stage, its DIY influence is felt everywhere from indie rock to the blogosphere to Christie's auction house.

HE HIT ME (and it felt like a kiss): Maine Today posts the Crystals original and the Grizzly bear cover of the shoulda-been- a-big-red-flag-about Phil Spector number for a creepy Twofer Tuesday.

THE KILLERS get a fairly meaty profile in the Times of London.

BRIAN WILSON gives a sad and painful interview to the Washington Post. Obviously not one of his good days.

THE ACORN: lead singer Rolf Klausener gives WRAL interesting descriptions of the band's sound and influence.

BLUEGRASS APOCOLYPSE: Bluegrass has been transformed from a mostly played-out festival circuit relic into a viable commercial force. But at what cost?

SCARLETT JOHANSSON tells December's Allure she doesn't know why Lindsay Lohan doesn't like her, and  is flattered that she inspired Katy Perry to pen her hit "I Kissed A Girl."  Sorry gals, she's married!  BONUS: Some behind-the-scenes from her Allure photo shoot.

HEATHER LOCKLEAR has been formally charged with misdemeanor DUI in connection with her September arrest.

ANGELINA JOLIE tears up while talking about her mother who died after a 7 1/2-year battle with cancer.

BRITNEY SPEARS will be taking part in lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.

JOHNNY DEPP: First look at Tim Burton's Mad Hatter?

CHRISTOPHER LLOYD -- of "Taxi" and the "Back to the Future" trilogy -- lost an 11 million dollar home in the current Montecito, California wildfires.  Too early for a flux capacitor joke?

STAR TREK: That new trailer is now online in glorious Quicktime.

CLORIS LEACHMAN: The actress and former "Dancing with the Stars" competitor was hospitalized briefly last week with pneumonia, but was treated and released at a Los Angeles-area hospital.

MARK CUBAN: The mogul and former "Dancing with the Stars" competitor has been charged with insider trading by the Securities and Exchange Commission, which claims that Cuban dumped his stake in an Internet company just after he heard confidentially that the company was about to issue low-priced shares. The Smoking Gun has the complaint. Cuban blogs that the "government's claims are false and they will be proven to be so." At the moment, I'm thinkin' that Major League Baseball won't let him buy the Chicago Cubs.

HELEN MIRREN was accused by the UK's Solicitor General of making ignorant, absurd and dangerous comments yesterday after speaking out again about rape prosecutions. Her comments may be wrong viz the British system, but she would sorta have a point in the US, at least in states where the prosecution and defense help select juries (though there are studies to the contrary). Overall, it's probably fair to say that prospective juror attitudes about rape matter more than gender. And that is probably equally true in Britain.

IRAQ: Parliament began debating the security pact that would allow US troops to remain for three more years, while an Iranian official close to that country's leadership praised the Iraqi Cabinet for approving the deal.

WHALE SHARK poops -- and it's like gold to scientists.  Let's go to the video.

COW!  Biplane edition. Video at the link.

COCKROACHES: How they go serpentine.

A PUPPY hit by a car going 70 mph lives -- precisely because it was hit at 70 mph.

A PYGMY HIPPO which started turning up his snout at food has started eating again, with help from a hand puppet.

THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

X

...with THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE! Jazz-influenced drummer Mitch Mitchell passed away late Wednesday at age 61 (or 62, depending where you read).  We remember him here with a threefer of "Stone Free," "Purple Haze" and "Hey Joe" live in Offenbach, Germany, as well as "The Wind Cries Mary" in Stockholm, Sweden, both vids circa 1967 (The barely show Mitch in the Swedish clip, but he makes that song). Or if you prefer, the threefer of "Voodoo Chile," "Hey Joe" and Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" from The Lulu Show.  Mitch also tears it up on "Fire" at the Royal Albert Hall in 1969.  And he kicks off "I Don't Live Today" at the same gig.  Mitchell, a former child actor,  was the last living member of the Experience. That should be some reunion gig.

THE 100 GREATEST SINGERS OF ALL TIME, according to Rolling Stone, with plenty of streaming audio.  Each singer gets a brief essay, some from other notable vocalists, like Elvis Presley by Robert Plant, James Brown by Iggy Pop and George Jones by James Taylor, to name a few.

THE FOO FIGHTERS will guest judge a Thanksgiving episode of Top Chef. Yes, really.

1990s are previewing tracks from their next album.

ELEANOR RIGBY: Was the song's tragic heroine based on a real person? The Independent reveals a new clue to her identity. There's an audio feature at NPR, too.

THE UKULELE ORCHESTRA of GREAT BRITAIN, previously featured here on a Friday, returns with the "Theme From Shaft."

ROBERT CHRISTGAU: With the flood of Internet, I can forget that the Dean's monthly Consumer Guide is still there for you at MSN.

THE CURE tribute album -- featuring tracks from Tanya Donelly, Dean & Britta, The Submarines and more -- is streaming in full again, this time via SPIN.

BEST MUSIC OF 2008: Amazon rolls out Editors' and Customers' Picks, with lists by genre also.

CUTOUT BIN: The late Mitch Mitchell let's his freak flag fly, as do the Psychedelic Furs, plus tracks from Marnie Stern to David Ruffin, Led Zeppelin to Toni Basil, The Clash to Wild Cherry, The MC5, the Hold Steady, Cheap Trick and more  -- this Friday's fortuitous finds can be jukeboxed or streamed separately via the Pate page at the ol' HM.

QUANTUM OF SOLACE, currently scoring 70 percent on the ol' Tomatometer, is this weekend's sole wide release.  Picking up mere moments after we left Bond in Casino Royale, this sequel does not quite equal the 2006 reboot -- in part because we no longer have the shock of the new, in part because director Marc Forster does not have the same experience directing action sequences that Martin Campbell did, though this movie is action-packed enough to keep you guessing as to whether Bond will find the title goal. Indeed, the film so rarely slows down for character (or anything else) that Forster becomes an even stranger choice as director.  The Bond girls here -- played by Olga Kurylenko and Gemma Arterton -- continue to break the mold (and you may have to check Arterton's screen credit to get a hidden Bondian joke.  Ultimately, the movie is a worthy successor, but see Casino Royale before this one.

PAULA ABDUL: The obsessed fan who died of a possible drug overdose/ suicide outside Abdul's home the other night overdosed in the exact same area around one year ago.

JENNIFER ANISTON is yapping again, this time on Oprah. And rumor has it that Brad Pitt called her to complain about her Vogue interview. RELATED: Aniston's on-again, off-again bf John Mayer will host a weekly variety show for CBS.

LINDSAY LOHAN getting formally engaged to Samantha Ronson in France this week?

MADONNA thinks Yankee slugger Alex Rodriguez "has the heart of a poet trapped inside an insanely gorgeous body."

JESSICA SIMPSON: Shut out of the Country Music Awards. Shocka.

BEST DVDs OF 2008: Amazon rolls out Editors' and Customers' Picks, with lists by genre also.

KRISTEN BELL talks to The A.V. Club about her many ongoing and upcoming projects. But it's Egotastic that has her bikini pictures from the set of Couple's Retreat. Call it Gratuitous Friday.

ANNE HATHAWAY's ex-bf Raffaello Follieri discovers that prison is not a nice place.

THE 10 MOST FASCINATING PEOPLE OF 2008:  Seven names from the Dec. 4 Barbara Walters special leak at the link.

THE STANS: Pres. Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan pressed US Secretary of State Rice, to ease up on airstrikes targeting militants linked to the Taliban and Al Qaeda in the lawless Afghan-Pakistani tribal regions.  Complaints that the strikes are alienating the local populations would ring truer, but for the Pakistani Army is coercing the tribes in Bajaur to fight the Taliban, and bombing their villages if they won't. Mullah Baradar, the deputy commander of the Taliban in Afghanistan, said the group has not and will not negotiate with NATO or the Afghan government.

IRAQ: In battle-scarred Mosul, Kurds and Arabs trade accusations rooted in ethnic rivalry and a battle for oil and power that many fear threaten security in Iraq. Meanwhile, security forces killed five al Qaeda operatives and captured 149 suspects during operations in Diyala and Ninewa provinces.

X

BANANA DERBY: Best Week Ever has the photo gallery of monkey jockeys, but let's go to the video.

TWEETY CATS: Cats are micro-blogging on Twitter.  The most popular appears to be Sockington, a/k/a Sockamillion.

DR. DOLITTLE, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources needs your help with some frogs.

AN ALLIGATOR was refused service at Johnny's Saloon.

SINGAPORE ZOO CLEANER does not choose life.

THE LAYAWAYS released an album this week to little fanfare, but you can stream "Keep It To Yourself" and "All Around The World" via the ol' HM. (Thx, Sylvia!)

PAKISTAN: Islamabad scrambles to prevent bankruptcy. Seems like that should be getting more coverage.

AFGHANISTAN: The early phases of election registration in Afghanistan went smoothly enough that some defense officials admit to feeling suspicious. Human-rights advocates and some Western officials say the government appears to be increasingly influenced by Islamists, seven years after the Taliban regime was driven from power. Afghanistan's army is growing at record levels and now plans or leads nearly two-thirds of military operations. US troops continue their slog in the deadly contest for Afghanistan's borderlands.

IRAN: The military claims to have successfully tested a ballistic missile that can reach Israel and the European continent. The US denounced the purported test.

IRAQ: The Iraqi cabinet will vote on the pact to govern the presence of US troops in the country on either Saturday or Sunday. The Iraqi army began paying Sunni Sawha fighters at dozens of stations opened this week throughout Baghdad.  The village of Duhaim vows to keep AQI from returning.
