WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Incredibles 2 romped atop the chart with a stunning 180MM; it's the best opening weekend for an animated film ever (beating Finding Dory) and the eighth best opening weekend ever (the third best of  2018).  It grossed only 51MM overseas, but did not open in many markets due to the World Cup.  Can it make 500MM with another Jurassic World coming Friday?  Now that's a cliff-hanger.  Ocean's 8 places with 19.6MM on a 53 percent drop, on track with Ocean's 13, but will that be enough to continue trying to revive the franchise?  Tag shows with 14.6MM against a 28MM budget, and is probably disappointing.  Solo drops to the fourth sloy with 9MM on a 42 percent drop that's not bad when losing over a thousand screens, but this one still has to hurt Disney, even as it celebrates Pixar's smash.  Deadpool 2 rounds out the Top Five with 8.8MM; it's close to 300MM now, but that's considerably less than the 363MM the original made -- was it the release date, or has the novelty worn off? Hmm.

THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE...

...with the wicked, wicked WILSON PICKETT, live from Germany, circa 1968. This disappeared from the Tube, but I've managed to find almost all of it reposted there or elsewhere.  His band warms up the crowd with the instrumental "Soulfinger," but Pickett electrifies from the moment he enters for "Everybody Needs Somebody" and doesn't let up through "Ninety-Nine and a Half (Won't Do)," "Mustang Sally" and "Stagger Lee." He takes it down just a half-notch for "I'm In Love" before cranking it back into top gear for "Funky Broadway," during which people dancing in front of the stage start turning up onstage (And why not? This rawks almost as hard as The Who's cover of "Shakin' All Over").  The tumultuous finale of "Land of 1000 Dances" from amid the crowd remains missing, but this other "Land of 1000 Dances" from 1966 is almost as wild, and in color to boot. Raw and riveting; if this can't put you in a weekend state of mind, probably nothing can.

DAVE MATTHEWS: A Critical Reappraisal?

THE NUMBER ONES looks at the time when Louis Armstrong, of all people, ended the Beatles' reign at No. 1 with... "Hello, Dolly!"

D.J. FONTANA, the longtime drummer for Elvis Presley who helped pioneer the backbeat swing of rock and roll, died Wednesday. He was 87.

NOW SHOWING: This week's wide relaeses are Incredibles 2, which is currently scoring 95 percent on the ol' Tomatometer; Tag, which is scoring 60 percent; and the update of Superfly, scoring 52 percent.

INCREDIBLES 2 lacks the James Bond scale of the original, but still was a lot of fun, for those of you who like fun.  The family stuff is entirely relatable -- and better executed than in any Fantastic Four movie by miles.  The outright comedy involving baby Jack-Jack's multiple uncontrolled powers is all quite funny.  The action scenes, if a bit smaller, are all well-executed -- and the artistry of the animation during Elastigirl's fight with the villainous Screeslaver is striking.  The villain, btw, has a point about how technology disconnects us from real experiences; it's not a new point, but then again, the ideas in the first movie weren't novel, just really well executed. And this one executes at a high level, just not quite as high.  If you liked the characters and interplay of the original, here's more quality time with them.
