U2: "Pride" and "MLK." Crushingly obvious. Have a dream.

DAVID CROSBY stopped by World Cafe for a chat and mini-set.

THE FLAMING LIPS are streaming Oczy Mlody via Spotify.

OF MONTREAL is streaming the Rune Husk EP via Spotify and Apple Music.

THE XX is streaming I See You via Spotify.

DION: A vintage performance of "Abraham, Martin & John."

LAURIE ANDERSON tals to The Guardian about Buddhism, lide, loss and Lou Reed.

SMASHING PUMPKINS: Billy Corgan updated The Loop (97.9 in Chicago) on a possible reunion.

LIZ PHAIR is making a double-LP in Ryan Adams’ Pax-Am studios.

TONY ALLSUP, a guitarist best known for losing a coin toss that kept him off a plane that later crashed and killed rock 'n' roll stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "Big Bopper" Richardson, has died. He was 85.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Hidden Figures tops the chart with 20.5MM, a very leggy 10 percent drop from its debut, and likely a big profit for the studio.  La La Land placed with 14.5MM riding a 43 percent increas in biz after its Golden Globes sweep; this one's already well in the black against a 30MM budget.  Sing showed with 13.8MM on a 33 percent drop, and is approaching 400MM worldwide against a 75MM production budget.  Rogue One slipped to the fourth slot with 13.8MM on a 38 percent drop that's not bad considering it lost almost 1000 screens this weekend; it's also now the biggest-grossing film released in 2016.  The Bye Bye Man rounded out the Top Five with 13.4MM, which means a movie with bad reviews and abysmal Cinemascores may well make a tidy profit.  This is what happens when you go over a month without a horror film.  Below the fold, the expansion of Patriot's Day opens as a disappointing sixth with 12MM, though good reviews and an A+ Cinemascore suggests it might find its legs in the typically abysmal dumping grounds of January.  Monster Trucks had a seventh-place 10.5MM debut; the studio already took a 100MM writedown on this one.

STAR WARS: Lucasfilm assures fans that it "has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa."

TWIN PEAKS: Kyle MacLachlan returns as Agent Cooper in the latest teaser trailer.

JOHNNY DEPP & AMBER HEARD are officially divorced.

PRINCE HARRY introduced his girlfriend, Meghan Markle, to sister-in-law Duchess Kate and niece Princess Charlotte.

ROBIN THICKE lost a round in his custody dispute with Paula Patton.

MICHAEL JACKSON's family's objections sunk a TV episode featuring Joseph Finnes as the pop icon.

DICK GAUTIER, who starred on Broadway in the original production of Bye, Bye Birdie and then famously played Hymie the Robot on the sitcom Get Smart, has died after a long illness. He was 85.

WILLIAM PETER BLATTY, the author whose best-selling book “The Exorcist” was both a milestone in horror fiction and a turning point in his own career, died of multiple myeloma on Thursday in Bethesda, Md. He was 89.  Not included in the NYT obit is the story of how Blatty knew someone who was so repulsed by the book that he threw it off the end of the Brighton pier; Blatty bought another copy, ran it under the tap, and placed it in the man's desk.

A SNORING DOG, confronted.

FISHCICLES at the Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge from 2015.

A FROZEN FOX was cut from an icy Danube.

A RANDY TORTOISE has been outfitted with wheels after wearing out his back legs doing the Wild Thing.

MERYL STREEP really doesn't like DONALD TRUMP.  And the feeling is mutual, with Trump calling her "overrated."  But Trump recently said he liked Streep. OTOH, Streep once gave a standing ovation to convicted child rapist Roman Polanski.  So 2017 is picking up pretty much where 2016 left off.

HIDDEN FIGURES, meanwhile, did edge out Rogue One at the box office, now that the sales are actuals.

Not much else to report today, but I'll be back tomorrow.
