WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: The One Direction concert movie topped the chart with 17 million, more like 20 million over the whole holiday weekend. Not as good as Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber, but better than the Jonas Bros or Katy Perry and not bad on a 10 million budget, especially after global rceipts are tallied.The Butler places with14.7 million on a leggy 11 percent drop.  We're The Millers shows with 12.6 million on a very leggy 3.5 percent drop.  Planes hangs around the No. 4 slot with 7.8 million, because it has the family crowd pretty much to itself.  Instructions Not Included -- targeted to Hispanic audiences -- rounds out the Top 5 with 7.5 million on a mere 347 screens.Below the fold, the poorly reviewed Getaway debuted in the ninth slot with 4.5 million, which is bad new, even against an 18 million budget.

SYRIA: The Obama administration began a full-press campaign on Sunday for Congressional approval of its plan to carry out a punitive strike against the Syrian government. The adminsitration's draft AUMF is so broadly worded that it could authorize a ground invasion, if Pres. Obama deemed it "necessary and appropriate" to deter the proliferation of WMD. The Arab League passed a resolution urging the UN and the international community to "take the deterrent and necessary measures against the culprits ... that the Syrian regime bears responsibility for.

NORTH KOREA is conducting major new construction to expand facilities at a launch site where it fired a rocket into orbit last December.

EGYPTIAN authorities have detained a migratory bird that a citizen suspected of being a spy.
