SLEATER-KINNEY rang in the new year by covering George Michael's "Faith" and bowie's "Rebel Rebel," bringing The Thermals and Spoon's Brit Dnaiel for the latter. LEE FIELDS & THE EXPRESSIONS performed for WNYC Soundcheck. BEACHHEADS stream four songs from their forthcoming self-titled debut. CHRISTIAN LOPEZ BAND played the Mountain Stage. WEEZER shared a White Album outtake, "The Last Days of Summer." THE XX dropped "Say Something Loving" on Spotify.
THE KILLERS play a Russian billionaire's party and PAUL McCARTNEY turns up for "Helter Skelter." GEORGE CLINTON talked to Rolling Stone about why he admires Flying Lotus and Thundercat, how hip-hop saved his career, and what's next. DAMIEN JURADO talked to Aquarium Drunkard about working with Richard Swift, the rules of Punk, movies and more... HOW THE CLASH rang in New Years Day at the Roxy in 1977. THE ULTIMATE BEST LPs of 2016? NME avergages the critics' polls.
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE (FOR REALS): Rogue One threepeated atop the chart as predicted with 64.3MM, essentially flat from the prior holioday weekend.Disney takes the top three slots for the year, with this one sandwiched between Finding Dory and Captain America: Civil War. Sing placed again on a 60 percent rise in domestic business and is already well into profit on worldwide receipts over 277MM. Passengers showed with 20.7MM and despite a 38 percent rise in business over last weekend, the studio must be praying for this thing to hit big in China, because 126MM worldwide so far is nowhere near the likely 400MM it needs to profit in theaters. Moana took the fourth slot with 14.3MM on an 85 percent rise in biz and looks set to mildly profit even before we get to merch sales. Why Him? ultimately edged out Fences to complete the Top Five with 13MM. BEN AFFLECK sounds kind of iffy on The Batman. MARIAH CAREY believes her New Year's Eve performance — which turned out to be a trainwreck — was sabotaged so TV execs could score bigger ratings than usual. M'kay. AZEALIA BANKS had a blood-stained room for performing witchcraft. ROGUE ONE: The New York Times details one particular visual effect (and why it doesn't completely work). BEN MENDELSOHN (a/k/a Rogue One's Director Krennic) and wife Emma Forrest have called it quits after four and a half years of marriage. MARK HAMILL paid tribute to Carrie Fisher. LEIA ORGANA: A Critical Obituary.
EAGLECAM UPDATE: The proud parents had a NYE hatching. A PIT BULL mauled a family who tried to put him in a Christmas sweater. SCORPION on a train. Delayed the trip like a hurricane. PAN PAN, the world's male oldest panda, died at age 31, leaving 130 descendents.

NOT A TON OF POST-HOLIDAY NEWS FOR TODAY....but we have these:
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE (SORT OF): The estimates aren't official, let alone the actuals, but Rogue One threepeats atop the early guesstimates and is almost the second-biggest movie of 2016, behind Finding Dory. The spin-off has done quite well for itself, but might have lost a little momentum in this frame, if the actuals come in as guesstimated. Sing places, bossted its sales over the prior holiday weekend, and is likely to land in the year's Top Ten grossers of the year. Passengers shows, but is sliding from disappointment to bust, especially compared to expectations based on the supposed star power of Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. Moana likely takes the fourth spot, probably not bad given the strong competition from Sing. Fences likely rounds out the Top Five, a strong showing for a film viewed more as awards bait (though perhaps a bit low for the preternaturally consistent Denzel Washington). CARRIE FISHER & DEBBIE REYNOLDS will have a joint funeral. The cause of Fisher's death remains unclear. GEORGE MICHAEL's autopsy was also inconclusive. RAY DAVIES of The Kinks is a knight. MARIAH CAREY had a NYE lip-sync malfunction. WILLIAM CHRISTOPHER, best known for playing Father Mulcahy on the hit sitcom M*A*S*H, died Saturday of lung cancer. He was 84. Stand by for the blessing. ALLEN WILLIAMS, “the man who gave the Beatles away”, died at age 86. TYRUS WONG, best known for his sketches for the Walt Disney animated feature Bambi, died Friday, according to a statement released by The Walt Disney Family Museum. He was 106.
