DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE airs a session at Morning Becomes Eclectic. WHITE DENIM stopped by Morning Becomes Eclectic for a session. PHANTOGRAM stopped by The Current for a chat and mini-set. LIBYA: The United Nations Security Council has expressed "concern" over the fate of the massive weapons stockpile built up in Libya under Gaddafi. The UN has expressing concern down to a science. PAKISTAN: Haqqani leadership - contrary to the American emphasis on drone strikes in the tribal areas - does not have to hide in Pakistan's ungoverned fringes. So close are the Haqqanis' ties to Pakistan's military and intelligence service that one might just as well look for them around the capital, Islamabad, or in the closely guarded military quarters of Rawalpindi. A HUSKY sings with a baby. HORSE RESCUED from a Bedford County swimming pool before hypothermia set in. THE SQUIRREL THREAT: Militant rodents are trained to play billiards and the piano. DAVID LYNCH is advance streaming Crazy Clown Time. SONGS THAT SCARE, courtesy of All Songs Considered. THE SCREAM STREAM, courtesy of Folk Alley. IT CAME FROM CREEPSYLVANIA: Ghoul's Haunted House Soundtrack. THE DECEMBERISTS drop "I 4 U & U 4 Me," an uptempo cut from their forthcoming EP, Long Live The King. TOM WAITS drops "Tell Me" -- a bonus cut from Bad As Me. PEARL JAM: Cameron Crowe pieced together video for "Not For You" to accompany his 20th anniversary documentary. CRAIG FINN (The Hold Steady) writes about DC's early 80s hardcore scene for The Guardian. BRIAN WILSON talks to the L.A. Times about making In The Key of Disney. WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Puss In Boots tops the Halloween weekend chart with 34 million, the latest in a line of rather tepid openings for DreamWorks animation (including How to Train Your Dragon, which went on to make 500 million worldwide). Paranormal Activity 3 slid 65 percent, but still took in 18.5 million, for an 81.3 million total against a 5 million budget. In Time took the third slot with 12 million, about what gurus expected, against a 40 million budget. Footloose came in fourth with 5.4 million; this will be profitable, but nowhere near the hit the original was. The Rum Diary rounds out the Top Five with 5 million against a 50 million budget; this may end up a flop, even accounting for Johnny Depp's worldwide fanbase. KRISTEN STEWART revealed that the sex scene she filmed with Robert Pattinson in the next Twilight pic was originally so explicit, it was rated R. Pattinson joked the two may have been married accidentally while shooting the new film. KAT DENNINGS celebrates her weirdness -- and the success of 2 Broke Girls -- with GQ. ELISABETTA CANALLIS says she had a father-daughter relationship with George Clooney. CONAN O'BRIEN will be officiating an on-air gay wedding this week, echoing the union between Tiny Tim and Miss Vicki on The Tonight Show nearly 42 years ago. BOND 23 gets another casting surprise, and it's a good one. YEMEN: Sanaa International Airport has been closed after four blasts destroyed two Yemeni fighter aircraft; the cause of the explosions has not been determined. PAKISTAN: Prime Minister Gilani categorically said there was no permission given to the US to launch any drone strike against any target inside Pakistan's territory. AFGHANISTAN: The US military is planning to start withdrawing troops from volatile Kandahar, shifting them to neighboring rural areas even as the Taliban shows it is capable of penetrating the city to attack, according to U.S. and Afghan military officials. IRAQ's defense chief has said his military will not be fully ready to defend Iraq from external threats until 2020 to 2024, according to a US inspector's report released on Sunday. The Obama administration plans to bolster the American military presence in the Persian Gulf after it withdraws the remaining troops from Iraq this year, according to officials and diplomats. That repositioning could include new combat forces in Kuwait able to respond to a collapse of security in Iraq or a military confrontation with Iran. MASTIFF vs DUCKLINGS: Who you got? PYTHON vs DEER: Who you got? GRANNY vs CROCODILE: Who you got? MOUNTAIN LION prowling DC? BEAVER: Candaians still love it.

|
Friday, October 28, 2011 - 08:00 AM Posted by: Karl
THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE: ...STREAMING FROM THE CASTLE EAST! This fan-made 1973 video for "The Monster Mash" is today's must-see clip (natch), though you can also see Bobby "Boris" Pickett perform it live at Little Steven's Halloween a Go-Go 2005. The covers by The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band and The Misfits are pretty good also -- the latter uses clips from the Rankin-Bass animated classic, Mad Monster Party. THE SHAGGS: It's Halloween! JIM CARROLL (deceased) sings about "People Who Died." KISS got their first television exposure in 1976 on The Paul Lynde Halloween Special. "DO THEY KNOW IT'S HALLOWEEN?" is the all-star charity send-up of Band-Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" featuring Roky Erikson, Elvira, plus members from Arcade Fire, Sonic Youth, Smoosh, Rilo Kiley, Sparks and many more. TRICK OR TREAT: Aquarium Drunkard has your holiday mixtapes. HALLOWEEN A/V: PopMatters' streaming Halloween videos and audio, from Bauhaus to to Stevie Wonder to Cream to The Cramps... has taken numerous hits from the lawyers since 2008, including the Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer," Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising," Santana's "Black Magic Woman", The Ramones' "Pet Sematary" and Tegan & Sara's "Walking With a Ghost." But there are still some gems there; including Screamin' Jay Hawkins. WARREN ZEVON is on that PopMatters list, but I prefer a live trifecta of "Werewolves of London," "Excitable Boy" and "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner." THOMAS DOLBY returns with a videogame and album after 20 years. So how about the mad vibe of "She Blinded Me With Science"? HENRI MANCINI: "Experiment in Terror." A sentimental favorite to those who grew up watching "Creature Features" on WGN before it went superstation. FIVE HAUNTINGLY HIP SIDES For Your Jazz Halloween. TRICK OR TREAT BIN: From Dusty Springfield to the New York Dolls, from Robyn Hitchcock to Donovan, from John Carpenter to Evan Dando & Juliana Hatfield, plus more -- this Friday's Halloween finds are streaming from the Pate page at the ol' HM. THE TIME WARP: Let's do it again. NOW SHOWING: This weekend's wide releases are: Puss In Boots, which is currently scoring 80 percent on the ol' Tomatometer; In Time, currently scoring 38 percent; and The Rum Diary, scoring 54 percent. "THRILLER": The original 13-minute Jacko classic, plus the filipino prisoners. IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, in its entirety, Charlie Brown. Every year, the bootleg video rises from the Internet patch. CLASSIC HORROR FILMS: An Infographic. 15 FACTS ABOUT HALLOWEEN: I counted more than that. FIVE THINGS you may not know about Halloween. THE HORRIBLY SLOW MURDERER With the Extremely Inefficient Weapon. Ten minutes of unimaginable terror. WAR of the WORLDS: Seventy-one years later, you can stream the infamous Orson Welles broadcast from the Internet Archive. THE WILHELM SCREAM: The repeatedly used film and television stock sound effect first used in 1951 for the film Distant Drums, now appearing as an in-joke in many films, is the subject of a Masters of Horror segment. 31 CLASSIC HALLOWEEN TV EPISODES AND SPECIALS, according to Zap2It. MY PARENTS LOVED HALLOWEEN: A Tumblr from the younguns. HOW TO CARVE YOUR PUMPKIN Using Power Tools. THE TOP 10 HORROR MOVIES YOU HAVEN'T SEEN, according to the UAB Kaleidescope. 23 UNUSUAL VAMPIRE VARIATIONS, courtesy of The A.V. Club. END CAT: Jake receives transmissions from the future. VAMPIRE PUG: This borders on abuse, really. IT'S A "SPIDER FEST" atop Chicago skyscrapers, including the Hancock center. WE CALL HIM "BLINKY": A three-eyed fish is discovered near a nuclear power plant.
