THE BEST & WORST REPLACEMENT SINGERS, according to Consequence of Sound

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Fast and Furious 6 opens with a fast and furious 120 million over the Memorial Day weekend (which is historically uneven).Vin Diesel & Co. are a long way to recouping the 160 million budget right off the line.  The Hangover, Part III places with 51 million, despite bad reviews... but it will likely end up well short of the prior sequel. (Would this have done better over July 4th opposite the Lone Ranger than the F & F franchise?) Star Trek: Into Darkness shows with 47  million; it now has 155.8 million domestic andd another 100 million so worldwide... but Will Smith is coming with After Earth this Friday.  Epic debuted in the fourth slot with 42.6 million against a 100 million budget; that's okay, but the studio will hope for proportionately larger overseas grosses.  Iron Man 3 rounds out the Top Five with another 24.4 million and will likely land among the top 20 alltime grossers by next weekend.

AMANDA BYNES claims she's allergic to drugs and alcohol and is suing everyone over her mistaken arrest. And that Chris Brown beat Rhianna because she's ugly.  Meanwhile, Internal Affairs are looking into her allegations of sexual assault.  The hitch is that she's not certifiably crazy. Yet.

CHRIS BROWN says he did nothing wrong when he was involved in a minor fender bender last week ... and claims the other driver has been ducking his attempts to discuss the matter. TMZ has learned the LAPD is investigating the singer, and it could trigger a probation violation that could land him in prison.

LINDSAY LOHAN: A model rehabber at Betty Ford?

ANGELINA JOLIE's aunt has lost her battle with breast cancer.

MARIAH CAREY had a wardrobe malfunction and cursed on GMA.

MORGAN FREEMAN fell asleep during a press junket for Now You See Me.

TOM CRUISE ditches The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

TIM CURRY: The Rocky Horror Show actor is recovering after suffering a major stroke at his home in Los Angeles.

THE UNITED STATES: The FBI arrested Wissam Allouche in San Antonio on May 24 on charges he lied about his affiliation with Hezbollah in order to get a sensitive position in the US Defense Deptartment.

SWEDEN: A nearly week-long spate of rioting spread outside Stockholm on Friday but authorities said police reinforcements sent to the Swedish capital had reduced the violence there, even though dozens of "youths" set cars and a recycling station ablaze.

TURKEY: Some 20 knife-wielding Islamists attacked 200 people staging a "kissing protest" in Ankara; at least protester was injured. The protest arose after authorities in Ankara, which is administered by the Islamist Freedom and Justice Party, admonished a couple for kissing in the street, and announced that subway passengers must obey moral codes. Although the police tried to prohibit the protest, they failed.

LIBYA: Prime Minister Zeidan denied allegations that the jihadists who attacked a military base and a uranium mine in Niger on May 23 came from Libya. Both Algeria and Niger have made the allegations, which if true suggest that Mokhtar Belmokhtar, who has claimed the attacks along with MUJAO, has established a base in southern Libya.

SYRIA: No one knows precisely how many Iraqi volunteers are crossing the border to fight in Syria, but it is clear there are enough to keep a steady stream of corpses returning home for burial.

IRAN: State media claimed that Iran has fielded a "massive" quantity of missile launchers that will allow the Iranian military to "crush the enemy" with simultaneous fire from long-range surface-to-surface missiles. The claim could not be independently verified.

A LARGE BADGER is causing "hysteria" at a girls' school after charging at pupils during playtime. Up next: a mushroom and a snake.

MEMORIAL DAY has become -- in the minds of some -- a day devoted to uncovering their swimming pools and barbeques. So take a moment (preferably at 3 p.m. local time) to remember what it's really about. At least I think, that's still the deal -- the Remember.gov still seems to be down (good job, feds).  Joyce Johnson and the "Arlington Ladies" who attend every funeral in Arlington National Cemetery, to ensure no soldier is buried alone, take more than a moment.  Re-read "A Death in the Family," as powerful as it was when Christopher Hitchens wrote it in 2007.  Revisit the Mudville Gazette for items like William Wyler's footage of the last mission of the Memphis Belle, or check the Tube for Alfred Hitchcock's footage of the liberation of the Belsen concentration camp.  The Wikipedia entry for Memorial Day notes a race track connection unrelated to the Indy 500.  It's a good day -- as good as we are likely to get -- for Sgt. Barry Sadler's No. 1 smash, "Ballad of the Green Berets."  or the movie adaptation of Gen. George S. Patton's "Speech to the Third Army."  As "Greyhawk" once wrote at the Mudville Gazette, "This is Memorial Day weekend. Enjoy it. Celebrate it - the people who died to give you that right would appreciate it. But they didn't die peaceably in their beds, these dogs who fell protecting sheep from wolves."
