THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

...with THE B-52s!  The quirky combo from Athens, GA, has had a long and storied career, but we'll (mostly) stick to the early stuff this weekend.  So, from the self-titled debut, classics "Planet Claire," "Rock Lobster,"  "Lava," and "Dance This Mess Around." And from the sophomore LP, Wild Planet, "Party Out of Bounds," "Give Me Back My Man", "Private Idaho" and "Dirty Back Road."  BONUS: "Song For A Future Generation," because it's the first song I heard them play live. DOUBLE BONUS: "Deadbeat Club," because get off my lawn.

BUILT TO SPILL: Doug Martsch visits World Cafe.

CHARLEY CROCKETT plays World Cafe.

TEGAN & SARA play "Yellow" on Late Night.

WET LEG covers Steve Lacy's "Bad Habit."

ARETHA FRANKLIN's FBI file has been disclosed.

WHAT BOB DYLAN WANTED AT 23, from Nat Hentoff, Oct. 16, 1964.

QUEEN ELIZABETH II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years. There's more from The Telegraph. Here's what likely happens next. She broke with tradition to stand with U.S. in a crisis. And here's a bit about the Queen's sense of humor. And with Paddington. Here are tributes from Elton John, the Rolling Stones, and Paul McCartney.  And inevitably, the last word, from The Beatles.

OLIVIA WILDE continues to spin the "Don't Worry, Darling" drama.

RICKY MARTIN is suing the nephew who accused him of sexual abuse.

JAY CRONLEY's Unusually Funny Movies.

STREAMING TV is having an existential crisis.

BERNARD SHAW, CNN's first chief anchor, died Wednesday at a Washington, DC, hospital of pneumonia unrelated to Covid-19, Shaw's family announced Thursday. Shaw was 82.

9/11: The first five minutes of CNN coverage. I came out of the shower, saw the second plane hit on NBC, and knew had had to contact my boss, whose daughter lived in NYC. There is still a lot of crazy stuff going on around the country and the world as a result, so consider taking a moment to watch and remember, esp. with a new generation that has grown up with no direct memory of the event.

A DOGGO trying a hula hoop.

LEAVE NO Spaniel Behind.

DON'T DO IT... oh, that's not so bad.

A CHIMPANZEE who ran away from a Ukrainian zoo was talked into returning after zookeepers offered her a raincoat, a hug and a bike ride.
