SONNY & THE SUNSETS "Pretend You Love Me" to start our week.

DJANGO DJANGO is streaming their self-titled debut.

THE WALKMEN played a Tiny Desk Concert at the offices of NPR.

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND: Psychedelic Sounds From the Gymnasium.

KELLY HOGAN stopped by Sound Opinions to sing numbers from her new solo record, I Like to Keep Myself in Pain.

GRIZZLY BEAR drops a new track called "Yet Again."

BACHMAN-TURNER OVERDRIVE: "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet."  Because it's summer. Plus, cowbell.

DINOSAUR JR: J Mascis talks to The Guardian about being rock's least loquacious talker, the merits of free dental care, and whether his band Dinosaur Jr were the Chuck Berry to Nirvana's Beatles. ALSO: Stereogum ranks the band's catalog.

JEFF the BROTHERHOOD's Jamin Orrall talks to The A.V. Club about pizza, The Beatles, and sex.

M WARD shuffles his iPod for The A.V. Club.

JIMMY CLIFF talks to All Things Considered about Rebirth and the nature of success.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: The Dark Knight Rises for a threepeat at the cinema with 36.4 million. That's on a much more reasonable drop of 41 percent than last weekend when the Olympics Opened.  This finale of Nolan's trilogy still trails The Dark Knight, which was as propelled by the death of Heath Ledger as this one seems harmed by the Aurora, CO theater shooting.  The Total Recall reboot places with 26 million, just barely beating to orignal's 25.5 million debut in 1990. Ouch.  Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days shows with 14 million, well below the earlier entries in this series, which made 22-24 million in their debuts. Ice Age: Continental Drift comes in fourth with 8.4 million; this will be the worst outing of this franchise here, but thes do so well worldwide that another is almost inevitable.  The Watch rounds out the Top 5 with 6.4 million on a 50 percent steep-for-comedy drop as this heads for red ink.

KRISTEN STEWART, staying with a movie producer is reportedly crying her eyes out non-stop and not showering in the aftermath of her fling with married director Rupert Sanders, whose wife reportedly has not seen him since the affair was revealed.

NATALIE PORTMAN and Benjamin Millepied got hitched in a Jewish ceremony at a private home near Big Sur, CA.

JOHN TRAVOLTA denied sexually assaulting a cruise ship worker in a new court filing.

LINDSAY LOHAN & CHARLIE SHEEN may make Scary Move 5 actually scary.

STEVIE WONDER filed for divorce from his wife of 11 years, fashion designer Kai Millard Morris.

ELLEN PAGE claims a crazed fan has been terrorizing her on Twitter - sending her multiple death threats.

THE FIRST ATOMIC BOMB WAS DROPPED ON HIROSHIMA 67 years ago today. The act that ushered in the nuclear age, but also helped end World War II, still stokes controversy. Three men involved in the attack on Hiroshima share their memories with the BBC. Film showing the effects of the attack was classified for decades, as were the complete (unredacted) "Magic" military intercepts, which tend to show Japan was not about to surrender. Those interested in a relatively neutral view of the events leading to the bombing could do worse than 1995's Hiroshima, a joint Canadian-Japanese production for Showtime.

GERMANY: Prosecutors accused a German man, "Thomas U.," of belonging to an Islamist terror group and assisting in an attack on a military base in Afghanistan in 2009.

EGYPT: The House of Fatwa announced this week that devout Muslims should not eat or drink in public places during daylight hours as a sign of respect to those fasting for the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

IRAQ: Thirty-four Iraqis were killed in a series of insurgent attacks throughout the country over two days. The targets included security forces, Awakening militiamen, government workers, and civilians.

MARU the BOX CAT returns with her own Olympics.

AN 11-YEAR-OLD CHEETAH broke her previous world record for the 100-meter dash and set a new best time of 5.95 seconds.

THE SWARM delayed a flight at Pittsburgh International Airport.

WHAT'S THAT, LASSIE? A fawn has fallen down a manhole?

THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

...with JOHN HUGHES! The sportos, motorheads, geeks, sluts, buds, wasteoids, dweebies and dickheads, they all adore him. They think he's a righteous dude. The writer/director behind "Sixteen Candles," "The Breakfast Club," "Pretty in Pink," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "Weird Science," National Lampoon's "Vacation" movies, "Home Alone," "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" and many more died at the age of 59, three years ago Monday.  Hughes masterfully married music to movies, so I pay video tribute to him today, starting (of course) with "Don't You Forget About Me" by Simple Minds from The Breakfast Club (the drumming on this song is impeccable), and Karla DeVito's "We Are Not Alone," along with the Ramones playing "Blitzkrieg Bop" (from National Lampoon's Vacation), David Bowie's "Young Americans" and The Vapors one-hit wonder, "Turning Japanese" and Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell" (all from Sixteen Candles, which opens to a clip of veteran WLS DJs Larry Lujack and Tommy Edwards), Van Halen's cover of "(Oh) Pretty Woman" and General Public's "Tenderness" (both from Weird Science), the Psychedelic Furs re-recorded title track from Pretty In Pink, which also featured Jon Cryer lip-synching to Otis Redding's "Try A Little Tenderness", The Smiths' "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" (a Hughes perennial), and OMD's "If You Leave," plus two more from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, "Danke Schoen" and "Twist and Shout" (which was shot on Dearborn and Randolph Streets in Chicago, with International Polka Queen Vlasta atop the float, though Cameron and Sloane were in front of the Post Office), plus Yello's unforgettable-no-matter-how-you-try "Oh, Yeah." Videos are scarce for Some Kind of Wonderful, but I found Flesh for Lulu's "I Go Crazy" and the March Violets' take on the Stones' "Miss Amanda Jones."

SOUL ASYLUM, live at the UBS Forum, via The Current.

BEST COAST stopped by The Current to play a few songs.

CHARLES BRADLEY brought his funky, live-wire energy to a soulful set at Newport 2012.

tUnE-yArDs: Merrill Garbus and her band brought her looping and loopy grooves to life at Newport 2012.

JOHN CALE drops the psychedelic "I Wanna Talk 2 U," with an assist from Danger Mouse, iirc.

BOB DYLAN drops "Early Roman Kings" in an unusual spot.

CREAM syncs "I Feel Free" at the Beat Club.

THE ENGLISH BEAT: Dave Wakeling discusses the band's catalog with The A.V. Club.

DINOSAUR JR: J Mascis talks to Drowned in Sound about Black Sabbath, Lou Barlow, and more...

HERE WE GO MAGIC is profiled at SPIN.

THE 10 BEST OTIS REDDING SONGS, according to Paste.

CUTOUT BIN: From Bruce Springsteen to the Peanut Butter Conspiracy, from Blur to the Byrds, from Cee-Lo Green to the Doobie Bros., plus Led Zeppelin, Redd Kross, Archie Bell & the Drells, Del McCoury and more -- this Friday's fortuitous finds are streaming from the Pate page at the ol' HM.

NOW SHOWING: This weekend's wide releases are the Total Recall reboot, which is currently scoring 27 percent on the ol' Tomatometer; and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, scoring 33 percent.

MILEY CYRUS' Los Angeles home was swarmed by police, fire and rescue squads responding to a report of a possible home invasion, but the pop star was apparently the victim of a "swatting" prank.  Or at least it will be called a prank until the police accidentally shoot someone.

SCARLETT JOHANSSON has been so scarred by her phone being hacked that she's ditched virtually all technology and fears she's being watched all the time, according to the ever-reliable Star magazine.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD gets its villain.

BFI'S GREATEST FILMS: The 50-year reign of Citizen Kane is over.
