IRAQ: Security forces conducted a massive sweep throughout Basra province Tuesday, with Iraqi Army and police units detaining 180 "suspects," including a Pakistani national. The Iraqi interior minister said scrapping the draft US-Iraq security pact would be a strategic mistake. The US military has warned Iraq that it will shut down military operations and other vital services throughout the country on Jan. 1 if the Iraqi government doesn't agree to a pact.  Tensions between Kurdistan and the central government of Iraq continued to bubble, as a parliamentary committee rejected a new draft of an oil law, and Kurdish politicians denounced the government's effort to create semi-tribal councils as a counterweight to Kurdish political power in Kirkuk.
