THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

...with THE dB's!  The influential, but oh-so-unlucky modern pop combo performs "Happenstance," "Bad Reputation" and "Living A Lie" from Sweden circa 1982.  From the studio, we have the clip for "Neverland." Chris Stamey left the band (temporarily) after which we got the infamous, banned-from-MTV clip for "Amplifier," plus live takes of "She Got Soul" and "Not Cool" from the legendary Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ circa 1986.  From the same time period, you can see the band help close down Folk City in NYC with a cover of Bob Dylan's "Positively 4th Street."

SEBADOH is streaming the reissued Bakesale.

ELLIE GOULDING stopped by WFUV for an unpluggedy session, including a cover of "Your Song."

GIVERS stopped by Morning Becomes Eclectic for a session.

THE BLACK ANGELS play a Tiny Desk Concert at the offices of NPR.

STEPHEN MALKMUS & THE JICKS drop "Senator" in advance of Mirror Traffic.

JOE JACKSON & THE ROOTS were "Steppin' Out" on Fallon.

SHARON VAN ETTEN talks to PopMatters about her newly found, brimming confidence; the advantages of working with collaborators as opposed to working solo; her expedited ascension in the world of indie rock; and, not least, her upcoming record.

DAVID BYRNE talks to Pitchfork about his early concert experiences, the legacy of Stop Making Sense, and his enduring, open-minded approach to the stage.

BRIAN WILSON talks to the Village Voice about Gershwin, Van Dyke Parks, and the issuing of SmiLE.

THE RAVEONETTES' Sharin Foo talks to Beatroute about the duo's collaborative methods.

FLOAT YOUR BOAT: Pop Culture Cruises Take Off.

CUTOUT BIN: From Frank Sinatra to Fatboy Slim, from Moby Grape to Cee-Lo Green, from the Jesus & Mary Chain to Frijid Pink, from the Vapors to the Chambers Bros, plus the Music Explosion, Elvis Costello, AC/DC, the Kinks and more -- this Friday's fortuitous finds are now streaming from the Pate page at the ol' HM.

NOW SHOWING: This weekend's wide releases are the JJ Abrams/Spielberg project Super 8, which is currently scoring 82 percent on the ol' Tomatometer; and Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer, scorng 15 percent.

CHARLIE SHEEN's fmr 2 1/2 men co-star Jon Cryer told Dave Letterman than no one saw the implosion coming.

SYRIA: The International Atomic Energy Agency will vote to require Syria to address the UNSC over its nuclear program. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights called on Syria to stop killing civilians. I'm sure Assad is quaking in his boots on both counts.

EGYPT: The US is pressuring Egypt's security services to re-arrest members of terrorist groups who escaped or were released from prisons during the uprisings this spring.

AFGHANISTAN:  Pres Karzai has asked Pres Obama not to order a steep withdrawal of US troops this year because his own forces are unprepared to cope with the threat of the Taliban.
