WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Puss In Boots tops the Halloween weekend chart with 34 million, the latest in a line of rather tepid openings for DreamWorks animation (including How to Train Your Dragon, which went on to make 500 million worldwide).  Paranormal Activity 3 slid 65 percent, but still took in 18.5 million, for an 81.3 million total against a 5 million budget.  In Time took the third slot with 12 million, about what gurus expected, against a 40 million budget.  Footloose came in fourth with 5.4 million; this will be profitable, but nowhere near the hit the original was.  The Rum Diary rounds out the Top Five with 5 million against a 50 million budget; this may end up a flop, even accounting for Johnny Depp's worldwide fanbase.

KRISTEN STEWART revealed that the sex scene she filmed with Robert Pattinson in the next Twilight pic was originally so explicit, it was rated R.  Pattinson joked the two may have been married accidentally while shooting the new film.

AFGHANISTAN: The US military is planning to start withdrawing troops from volatile Kandahar, shifting them to neighboring rural areas even as the Taliban shows it is capable of penetrating the city to attack, according to U.S. and Afghan military officials.

IRAQ's defense chief has said his military will not be fully ready to defend Iraq from external threats until 2020 to 2024, according to a US inspector's report released on Sunday.  The Obama administration plans to bolster the American military presence in the Persian Gulf after it withdraws the remaining troops from Iraq this year, according to officials and diplomats. That repositioning could include new combat forces in Kuwait able to respond to a collapse of security in Iraq or a military confrontation with Iran.
