THE DESCENDANTS:  Finally got around to Alexander Payne's latest, a dramedic meditation on the legacies we leave.  The story here is not as strong as those in Election or Sideways, but the film nonetheless bears most of the tonal qualities of a Payne film.  There will be talk of George Clooney getting an Oscar nomination -- and he is quite good -- as Matt King, who has a multiplicity of family issues to address. But Shailene Woodley, as his first daughter Alexandra, has a breakout performance which will take her beyond The Secret Life of the American Teenager.  Also, don't let Clooney lie to you in the opening narration -- while he promises that Hawaii is not a paradise, the cinematography suggests otherwise.
