WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: War for the Planet of the Apes topped the chart with 56.5MM, a little higher than the original but well below the sequel, which may be foreboding given that this finale is even darker overall. Spider-Man Homecoming placed with 45.2MM on a 61 percent drop that has to concern Marvel a bit, even with sure profit and the Apes in competition.  Despicable Me 3 showed with 19MM on a 44 percent drop that shows at least a little leg while already well in the black globally.  Baby Driver takes the fourth slot with 8.8MM and almost 100MM worldwide against a 34MM budget.  And The Big Sick moves up to round out the Top Five with 7.6MM and 16MM total (Lionsgate and Amazon reportedly invested 12MM in the rights).

GEORGE ROMERO, father of the modern movie zombie and creator of the groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead franchise, has died at 77, his family said. Probably too soon for the "and then he got up" joke.
