WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Venom tops the chart with 80MM, a figure likely slightly inflated, but a record October debut, easily besting Gravity's 55.7MM in 2013. Such is Marvel's power that a Sonyverse movie with a low Tomatometer score can rule so decisively, though it was undoubtedly aided by the general lack of serious competition. A Star Is Born places with an impressive 41.3MM (more than its 36MM production budget), effectively kicking off awards season in the sense that it will rack up tons of nominations, though the number of wins outside musical categories will depend greatly on the competition. Smallfoot shows with 14.9MM on a leggy 35 percent drop, putting it on track to recoup its reported 80MM production budget in theaters. Night School drops 55 percent from the tops to the fourth slot with 12.3MM; it will still be profitable. The House with a Clock in its Walls rounds out the Top five with 7.3MM; the worldwide receipts here project out to 100MM, which is probably fine against a 42MM budget with non-blockbuster marketing costs.
