WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Real Steel knocks out the remakes with 16.3 million, off 40 percent, which is not bad, but not exactly a rock-em, sock-em performance.  The unnecessary, but reportedly not awful Footloose remake places just behind with 16.1 million against a 24 million budget.  The Thing prequel showed with a weak 8.7 million against a 40 million budget, which may be scarier than the movie itself.  The Ides of March takes the fourth slot with 7.5 million, but on a leggy 28 percent drop, with a 22.2 million total against an 18 million budget.  Dolphin Tale rounds out the Top 5 with another 6.3 million and a 58.7 million total against a 37 million budget.  Below the fold, Moneyball and 50/50 look leggy in the sixth and sseventh slots, while The Big Year debuted at No. 9 with 3.3 million against a 40 million budget (ouch).

Also, Iran failed in its attempt to send a live monkey into space last month. And Pres. AFGHANISTAN: Despite a sharp increase in assassinations and a continuing flood of civilian casualties, NATO officials said Saturday that they had reversed the momentum of the Taliban insurgency as enemy attacks were falling for the first time in years.

IRAQ: The United States is abandoning plans to keep troops in Iraq past a year-end withdrawal deadline, the Associated Press has learned.

TERROR in the USA: Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian who tried to detonate his underpants in a flight over Detroit on Christmas Day 2009, pled guilty to all charges and called the bomb a "blessed weapon." Abdulmutallab admittedly worked for al Qaeda, and had been instructed by Anwar al-Awlaki to set off the bomb over US airspace to maximize casualties.

IRAN: The US Treasury Department has designated for sanctions five individuals involved in an alleged plot to assassinate Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the US, including Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF). Soleimani "oversees the IRGC-QF officers who were involved in this plot," according to Treasury.  It's a bizarre plot.

AfPAK: The US government signaled it was still willing to negotiate a peace deal with the al Qaeda-linked, Pakistan-backed Haqqani Network in Afghanistan. In Pakistan, as fear grips municipal committee school students and teachers, the Rawalpindi police seem to be unmoved and reluctant to take any action against the moral brigade who attacked a girls school last week and thrashed and terrorized students and teachers.

AL QAEDA in the Arabian Peninsula confirmed that Anwar al Awlaki and Samir Khan were killed in a Predator airstrike in southern Yemen late last month.

SYRIA: The Syrian National Council agreed on a democratic framework for a future Syria and wants international observers. However, Syria's foreign minister warned other nations not to bestow international legitimacy on the opposition group.

IRAN rejected a US direct "military hotline" proposal. Iranian opposition leader Mehdi Karoubi was briefly freed from house arrest, a move indicating that authorities might ease conditions for him.  The EU expanded sanctions against Iran. IRAQ: As the US draws down its forces, fears abound that Iran will simply move into the vacuum and extend its already substantial political influence more deeply. But in Najaf, a center of Shiite Islam, some officials say that Iran wore out its welcome long ago.
