THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

...with DEVO!  Since it's Friday, here they are on Fridays (ABC's ill-fated attempt to ape SNL) in 1980, playing "Girl U Want" and "Gates of Steel," along with "Whip It" and "Uncontrollable Urge" -- each with costume changes.  The band returned in 1981, where they played "Theme From Adventures of The Smart Patrol" and "Jerkin' Back 'n' Forth," followed by "I Saw Jesus" and "Through Being Cool," then their cover of "Working in a Coal Mine."  BONUS: Vintage Devo, covering "Satisfaction" on French TV.

BRITISH SEA POWER stopped by The Current for a chat and mini-set.

CHAPEL CLUB also stopped by The Current for a chat and mini-set.

SUMMER FICTION stopped by the World Cafe for a chat and mini-set.

COTTON JONES stopped by Oregon Public Broadcasting for a chat and mini-set in audio and video.

MIDDLE BROTHER, the hand-clapping foot-stomping indie supergroup, gets a segment on Fresh Air.

BROKEN RECORDS did an interview plus live tracks at the World Cafe.

JANE'S ADDICTION frontman Perry Farrell premiered "End To The Lies" on the Chilean radio station Radio Futuro's "La Ley Del Rock" program. It's the abnd's first track with new bassist Dave Sitek (TVotR).

ALL SONGS CONSIDERED: Tracks from Nirvana, Dent May, Spectrum, Avey Tare and more from Guest DJ Panda Bear.

PEARL JAM: "First week rehearsals," supposedly taking place between 10.13 - 23 in 1990.

MUDHONEY: Tour Promo '93.

30 FUN INDIE COVERS of pop tunes, courtesy of Paste, with plenty of embedded video.

HUSKER DU covers The Beatles' "Ticket to Ride," circa 1985.

DESTROYER: Dan Bejar talks to Austinist about songwriting, poetry, the role of the adult in the music industry, and more...

RURAL ALBERTA ADVANTAGE: Nils Edenloff chats with Creative Loafing about his band's growth, their tour tricks, and where the road may lead next. (Thx, Chromewaves.)

ROBBIE ROBERTSON talks to Spinner about The Band, rebellion and his friendship with Eric Clapton.

THE DODOS: Meric Long offered his thoughts on the No Color record, his expectations, and intense effects of the vibraphone.

JASON ISBELL talks to MOKB about the recording of Here We Rest.

WYE OAK: Jann Wasner talks to Songwriters in Process about, er, songwriting and process. (Thx, LHB.)

CUTOUT BIN: From Mama Cass to Temple of the Dog, from Nico to the Beach Boys, from the Mountain Goats to Run-DMC, plus Scruffy the Cat, Suzanne Vega, Aretha Franklin, Broken Social Scene, the Knickerbockersand more -- this Friday's fortuitous finds are now streaming from the Pate page at the ol' HM.

NOW SHOWING: This weekend's wide releases include the animated Hop, which is currently scoring 23 percent on the ol' Tomatometer; the sci-fi-thriller Source Code, currently scoring 88 percent; the horror flick Insidious, scoring 67 percent; and a wide re-release of the Oscar-winning The Kings Speech.

BRITNEY SPEARS is being sued for 10 million bucks by her former business partners for breach of contract, fraud and deceit, according to RadarOnline. Meanwhile, you won't be getting a live, unedited interview with the pop wreck -- even if the interviewer has known her for approximately half her life.

CHARLIE SHEEN is planning a wild after party when his tour hits New York City next week ... and, appropriately, cops in the area are already calling for back up.  Ex-wife Denise Richards hired extra security to protect her from Chuckles.

EMILY DESCHANEL and husband David Hornsby are expecting their first child. Zooey is excited!

MAD MEN creator Matt Weiner and AMC reached an agreement for a new contract that will keep the showrunner at the helm of Emmy winning drama series for as many as three more seasons.  Weiner also spoke exclusively to my pals at Basket of Kisses about the deal, which brings Season 5 in March 2012.

LINDSAY LOHAN: Hmmmm.

CAMERON DIAZ talks about reuniting with Justin Timberlake for Bad Teacher.

KATIE HOLMES is out in full force to promote her controversial new miniseries, "The Kennedys," and well, clear the air about a recent candy mishap.

SYRIA TV accused an Egyptian-American activist currently in custody of attempting to "destabilize Syria." President Assad claimed the government would draft new anti-terrorism laws as a first step to lifting the emergency laws that have been in effect since 1963.

LIBYA: NATO leaders are not only refusing to arm the rebels, but also told the rebels that if they endanger civilians, they will not be shielded from possible bombardment by NATO planes and missiles, just as the government's forces have been punished.  There are reportedly death squads on both sides of the conflict. Gaddafi's regime has sent one of its most trusted envoys to London for confidential talks with British officials, perhaps in search of an exit strategy.

AFGHANISTAN: The Obama administration is debating the pace of the drawdown of US forces.

BRONX ZOO COBRA: Busted.

ANGRY WASPS capture competing ants and airdrop them. Not to be confused with Angry Birds.

A SPIDER caused a woman and her children to flee their home in western Newfoundland early Wednesday. No word on the tuffet.

BABY GAZELLE: Awww...some pics.

RHETT MILLER of The Old '97s talks to Gibson about everything from over-indulging on the streets of Austin to texting lyrics to Bob Dylan. (Thx, LHB.)

RICHARD ASHCROFT talks to BlackBook about the United Nations of Sound.

BOB CLEARMOUNTAIN, master music mixer, is profiled by The Wall Street Journal.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules is your surprise No. 1, as a sequal that may never have been made but for DVD sales takes in 24 million against a 21 million budget. Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch -- an apparently disappointing film -- disappointed at the ticket booth also, taking in 19 million against an 82 million budget. It will be lucky to clear much over 50 million, and will need overseas receipts to break even (even that's not a sure thing; Watchmen grossed less overseas than domestically). Is the WB going to worry about Snyder helming the Superman reboot? Limitless took the third spot with 15.2 million on a mere 19.5 percent drop. Limitless is already in the black, and sure to get blacker.  The Lincoln Lawyer held the fourth slot with 11 million, again with a small 16.7 percent drop -- but its receipts to budget ratio is about the opposite of Limitless. Even so, it should break even in North America.  Rounding out the Top 5 is Rango with 9.8 million, breaking the 100 million mark, with another 75 million overseas to date.

REESE WITHERSPOON got hitched to entertainment agent Jim Toth.

LINDSAY LOHAN will be removing "Lohan" from her official name. Meanwhile, a legal technicality could save her from going to jail for her alleged probation violation - or at least delay it. But cops are reigniting their investigation into allegations she attacked a Betty Ford staffer.

BRITNEY SPEARS took to the Palms Casino Resort's Rain Nightclub stage in Las Vegas Friday night for a surprise performance. Video at the link.

CHRIS BROWN & RHIANNA: Together again? Brown's spokeswoman will no longer be representing him after the star trashed his GMA dressing room, smashed a window and left without his shirt from the morning talk show earlier this week.

MADONNA: A high-profile charitable foundation set up to build a school for impoverished girls in Malawi, founded by the singer Madonna and fellow devotees of a prominent Jewish mysticism movement, has collapsed.

ELIZABETH TAYLOR was late to her own funeral, by her own request.

YEMEN: Pres. Saleh said he is "ready to step down with respect and dignity" but only to qualified caretakers of government.

SYRIA: Security forces reportedly withdrew to the outskirts of Daraa, where protests demanding the release of youths arrested for spraying anti-government graffiti spiraled into daily confrontations with security forces, who then repeatedly opened fire. With 61 people confirmed killed by security forces, the country's status as an island of stability amid the Middle East storm seemed irretrievably lost.

LIBYA: Pro-Gaddafi forces have abandoned Ajdabiyah as rebel forces took control of the city. Rebels are advancing on Brega as Gaddafi's forces have launched an attack on Misrata. The US and Europe are considering arming the Libyan rebels. Sky News has video of Gaddafi's goons dragging a woman away who claimed she was raped and tortured by agents of the regime. OTOH, Abdel-Hakim al-Hasidi, the Libyan rebel leader, has said jihadists who fought against allied troops in Iraq are on the front lines of the battle against Gaddafi's regime.

EGYPT: In post-revolutionary Egypt, where hope and confusion collide in the daily struggle to build a new nation, religion has emerged as a powerful political force, following an uprising that was based on secular ideals. The Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group once banned by the state, is at the forefront, transformed into a tacit partner with the military government that many fear will thwart fundamental changes.
