THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

... with THE BYRDS!  Pretty much because I dig them as we turn into Spring (or Fall).  Let's start with a rare 1965 clip of their breakthrough smash cover of "Mr. Tambourine Man."  There are screaming girls, plus go-go dancers when they hit Shivaree for "All I Really Want to Do" and "Feel A Whole Lot Better."  Next up is a rare sync of "I Knew I'd Want You." There are even more dancers when they cover Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" for Shindig! on June 23, 1965, while I'm pretty sure that's Ed Wynn introducing "Chimes of Freedom."  You might recognize the voice introducing "Bells Of Rhymney" from poolside in August 1965 and "It Won't Be Wrong" from a corral in January 1966 on Where The Action Is.  BONUS:  Want a couple in color?  Here's "Turn, Turn, Turn!" and "Mr. Spaceman." DOUBLE BONUS: A rare 1967 sync of "Eight Miles High."

ST VINCENT: Annie Clark plays and chats at World Cafe Live in Philly.

PERFECTPUSSY plays a full set at Stubb's BBQ for NPR Music's 2014 SXSW showcase.

PATTI GRIFFIN stopped by World Cafe for a chat and mini-set.

THE BLACK ANGELS stopped by World Cafe for a chat and mini-set.

NAIL HARVEST covers Teenage Fanclub's "Ain't That Enough," emphasizing its Byrdsy qualities.

GNARLS BARKLEY: "Crazy," Galactic Empire-style from the 2006 MTV Music Awards. Chewbacca on the throne.

THE HOLD STEADY: Craig Finn talks to SPIN about religion, SXSW, and writing female characters.

PETER HOOK talks to Drowned In Sound about the split with his former New Order bandmates and the prospects of ever working with them again, the current state of the music industry and his beloved Manchester United.

KICKING METHADONE with Johnny Winter.

ROCK & ROLL: In One Tweet.

CUTOUT BIN: and more -- this Friday's fortuitous finds are streaming from the Pate page at the ol' HM.

NOW SHOWING: This weekend's wide openings are Noah, which is currently scoring 73 percent on the ol' Tomatometer (88 percent with top critics); and Sabotage, currently scoring 19 percent.  The Grand Budapest Hotel finally expands wide, scoring 91 percent (my blurb).

GWYNETH PALTROW & CHRIS MARTIN flew to the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas the day before announcing their separation. Martin struggled to deal with various aspects of Paltrow's lifestyle which is believed to have led to their split.

ZAC EFRON was violently socked in the mouth by a sketchy transient in a bad area of downtown L.A. just after midnight.

JAMES FRANCO talks to L.A. magazine about his new poetry book and being on Lindsay Lohan's list of lovers.

TURKEY: Authorities shut down YouTube after the airing of leaked audio in which the foreign minister, the intelligence head, and a top general are heard discussing possible military operations in Syria.
