UKRAINE: Armed pro-Russian separatists seized more buildings in eastern Ukraine on Monday, expanding their control after the government failed to follow through on threatened military crackdown leaving Moscow's partisans essentially unopposed. Ukraine’s failure to enforce its own ultimatums and its appeal on Monday to the United Nations to send peacekeepers laid bare a grim reality for the shaky government in Kiev, where political leaders and security forces have few reliable ways to confront Russian-backed separatists in the restive east.

VENEZUELA: The military admitted it committed "some excesses" during weeks of political unrest that have left more than 40 people dead. Venezuela's opposition has accused the government of delaying publication of March inflation data for political reasons, saying the annual rate has reached an alarming 60 percent. Venezuelan TV journalist Nairobi Pinto has been released, eight days after she was kidnapped.

THE UNITED KINGDOM: The Department for Education as well as the Birmingham City Council have widened their parallel investigations of an alleged plot by Islamist radicals to take over local schools, and are now looking at 25 schools in the area. Former staff at the schools have alleged that boys and girls were segregated, non-Muslim staff were bullied, sex education was banned, and that extremist views including those of al Qaeda were promoted. School trustees have dismissed the allegations.
