JAY BLACK, lead singer for the 1960s pop group Jay and the Americans, has died at the age of 82. "Come a Little Bit Closer" (which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, in 1964) "Cara Mia" (peaked at No. 4, in 1965) and "This Magic Moment" (peaked at No. 6, in 1969) are all the bomb.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Dune has easily become Denis Villeneuve’s biggest domestic opening at the box office, and the best start for Warner Bros. and an HBO Max day-and-date title, topping the chart with 40.1MM, well ahead of tracking’s opening forecast of 30MM-35MM.  Halloween Kills placed with 14.5MM on a 71 percent drop despite the looming holiday, the cautionary other side of a day-and-date hybrid release.  No Time to Die shows with 11.9MM on a 50 percent drop, a continuing laggard against Bond's box office worldwide.  Meanwhile, Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch opened with 1.3MM, which is a godsend for arthouse theaters and just a little less than the wide debut of Anderson's previous and popular-for-him flick, The Grand Budapest Hotel.

ALEC BALDWIN: Hours before the actor fatally shot a cinematographer on the New Mexico set of “Rust” with a prop gun, a half-dozen camera crew workers walked off the set to protest working conditions.  There is an unconfirmed report that the gun was used for off-set target shooting before the tragedy.  Attention is turning to the assistant director as well as the relatively inexperienced armorer.
