TOM VERLAINE,  whose band Television was one of the most influential to emerge from the New York punk rock scene centered on the nightclub CBGB — but whose exploratory guitar improvisations and poetic songwriting were never easily categorizable as punk, or for that matter as any other genre — died on Saturday in Manhattan. BARRETT STRONG, the Motown artist who sang the label’s first major hit “Money (That’s What I Want)” and co-wrote songs for the Temptations and others, including “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” "War," “Cloud Nine,” "Ball of Confusion (That’s What the World is Today),” “I Can’t Get Next to You,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” and “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)” has died.
