THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE: ...with THE GO-GOs! They made history as the first all-female band that both wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to top the Billboard album charts. Kind of a hard band to place seasonally. Their debut, Beauty and the Beat, which yielded hits like "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat," as well as great album cuts like "This Town," "Lust to Love," "Tonite" and "How Much More," came out in late Summer 1981, iirc, and "Lips" was climbing the charts that Fall, so I mentally place the band in this time of year. And it's still warm enough that the title track to the too-quick sophomore album, "Vacation," -- or their cover of the Capitols' "Cool Jerk" -- doesn't sound too out of place. "Get Up and Go" was also a single from that LP, but it didn't make the Top 40. The band would chart twice more -- in 1984, with "Head Over Heels" and "Turn to You" -- before splitting and the near-inevitable reunion tours. JAWBOX visits KEXP. PRIESTS visits KEXP. BRITTANY HOWARD visits World Cafe. ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA returns with "From Out of Nowhere." CHARLI XCX & JIMMY FALLON (playing Dave Gahan) mash up Depeche Mode's "Just Can't Get Enough" with Icona Pop's "I Love It"... and it works. THE REPLACEMENTS: How their biggest failure predicted the future of indie rock. R.E.M.'s Monster Is Still Trying to Reach You, If You'll Let It In. ROCK STARS ARE NOT OUR FRIENDS: The wild story of CREEM magazine. ROBERT FRIPP spars with David Bowie's estate. SUGAR, SUGAR: How did a bubblegum pop tune by a fictional cartoon band become the top song of the year in 1969?
ABOMINABLE is this weekend's sole wide movie release, currently scoring 78 percent on the ol' Tomatometer. THE IRISHMAN: Martin Scorsese's upcoming epic has a trailer online. STAR WARS: Marvel boss Kevin Feige is reportedly set to lend his talents to the franchise. KEANU REEVES says he's "absolutely" excited about The Matrix 4 script. JASON BATEMAN and RYAN REYNOLDS are in talks for a Clue movie. JENNIFER LOPEZ & SHAKIRA will be performing during the Super Bowl halftime show. JENNA FISCHER & ANGELA KINSEY are doing a podcast about The Office. NALA, an autism service dog, got to meet her hero and they became the best of friends. A ROUND OF APPLAUSE for this doggo? A BOBCAT celebrates a birthday. A WALRUS defending her cubs sank a Russian Navy boat in the Arctic Ocean.

New Releases, Indie Basement, Motown Unreleased '69, White Stripes |
|
Monday, September 23, 2019 - 08:00 AM Posted by: Karl
THE TEMPTATIONS: "Psychedelic Shack." That's where it's at. MOTOWN UNRELEASED: 1969 is a 60-track, digital-only release now streaming online. NEW RELEASES: Paste can point you to Brittany Howard, Hiss Golden Messenger, Liam Gallagher, Vivian Girls and More. INDIE BASEMENT has a couple of those new releases, but what you want to stream is the remastered “Sunflower,” from The Springfields (jangle-rock masters Ric Menck and Paul Chastain). THE WHITE STRIPES' final performance is available to stream and download via Nugs.net. THE BEATLES: Hear a "Come Together" outtake and the 2019 Giles Martin mix. LEONARD COHEN: Hear the posthumous "The Goal." RICHARD HAWLEY covers Dylan's "Ballad of a Thin Man." THE HIGH LLAMAS' Sean O'Hagan reunites with his former Microdisney bandmate Cathal Coughlan on a new solo song "Candy Clock." TEGAN & SARA share "Don't Believe The Things They Tell You (They Lie)." THE KILLERS pay tribute to Ric Ocasek with a live cover of The Cars' "My Best Friend's Girl" in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. And the crowd goes wild. BONUS: Lord Huron at ACL Live. And Bryan Adams. THOM YORKE talks about his ex-partner's death in new interview for BBC Radio 4's 'Desert Island Discs.' THE 50 MOST VALUABLE records in the world. THE MEKONS' Rock 'N' Roll turns 30, and it sounds as necessary and urgent today. THE NUMBER ONES looks at Rod Stewart's horny smash, "Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright)." And some bonus Number Twos you don't want to miss.
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Downton Abbey tops the chart with 30MM against a reported budget of 13-20MM. And it's made almost that much outside North America. My guess would be this was a very front-loaded movie for fans of the show, so good thing they had a big debut. Ad Astra places with 19.2MM, while Rambo: Last Blood shows with 19MM -- close enough that this could flip when moving from estimates to actuals. Ad Astra's budget was reportedly anywhere from 80-100MM, so it has some work to do if it wants to replicate the success of Gravity or Interstellar. The Rambo flick was budgeted at only 50MM and the return is probably disappointing even at that, echoing the flop of Rocky Balboa before Stallone retooled for Creed. It: Chapter Two takes the fourth slot with 17.2MM, badly trailing its predecessor (which in fairness made a surprising mountain of cash). Hustlers rounds out the Top Five with 17MM on a 49 percent drop, still a big win for the studio. THE EMMYS went to these people. Congrats. As someone who liked Fleabag, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Game of Thrones, and Chernobyl, I can't complain much. STEPHEN ROOT finally got an Emmy nomination, and a New York Times profile. MILEY CYRUS broke up with Kaitlynn Carter. This is my shocked face. LINDSAY LOHAN was dumped, reportedly by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammad bin Salman. SEX & THE CITY's Candace Bushnell, sits down with Harper's BAZAAR to dish on all the men from the hit series. GAME OF THRONES: The cast still has a WhatsApp group. SEAN BEAN Wants to Stop Dying On Screen. HOW A BAT pees.
BELLA was rescued from a cage on a South Korean dog meat farm; she finally got to feel grass under her feet. SHE QUIT HER JOB. HE GOT NIGHT GOGGLES. They Searched 57 Days for Their Dog. A MAMA LYNX and her seven kittens stopped by a front porch in Alaska.
