PHIL COLLINS is releasing a career-spanning box set of non-Genesis, non-solo-LP tracks, Plays Well With Others. THE NUMBER ONES looks at the Beatles' transcendent ripoff "I Feel Fine." A GIANT, SHIRTLESS JEFF GOLDBLUM marks the 25th anniversary of Jurassic Park. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEEN ON BROADWAY, but also on Netflix (soon). SIMPSONS creator Matt Groening talks about our outrage culture. DAVID SPADE still talks to the troubled Heather Locklear. GODZILLA: KING OF THE MOSNTERS leaked footage through Millie Bobby Brown. LEMON PIPERS: "Green Tambourine."THE SUFFERS stop by World Cafe. THE BEACH BOYS: Aquarium Drunkard assembles a (mostly) post-Murray playlist. THE JAMES HUNTER SIX stops by WFUV's Studio A. J MASCIS, singing Tom Petty karaoke to a half-empty bar in Massachusetts. FATHER JOHN MISTY gets animated in the video for "Date Night." THE STORY OF GIRL GROUPS in 45 Songs. SNAIL MAIL: Lindsey Jordan talked to PopMatters about the story behind album, her songwriting, and the attention that she's been getting. RODNEY CROWELL: An elder statesman of Americana canvasses his career.
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Hotel Translylvania 3: Summer Vacation tops the chart with 44.1MM, right between the original and the sequel; note those opened in September to play through Halloween, while this one will have to make its money on weekdays also. Ant-Man and the Wasp places with 28,8MM on a 62 percent drop that's a little concerning but not shocking; it now looks to top out around where the original did, short of 200MM domestic. The lagging foreign grosses might also be a concerm, tho the World Cup was likely a factor here. Skyscraper shows with 25.5MM against a 125MM budget which means The Rock better be cooking in foreign markets. One wonders if there isn't just a lot of fatigue this Summer: Star Wars, The Rock, maybe even Marvel -- still plenty of money being made, but some concern about studios spending big on supposedly safe plays. Incredibles 2 takes the fourth slot with another 16.2MM, but seeming less likely to become the year's third 600MM grosser. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom rounds out the Top Five with 15.5MM, and the 363MM total domestic also raises that fatigue question -- or maybe the franchise reboot hasn't aged well for people. KATE UPTON & JASON VERLANDER are expecting their first child. SCARLETT JOHANSSON has dropped out of Rub & Tug, the movie that would have seen her play a transgender man. BILLBOARD /THR CEO John Amato is being investigated for sexual misconduct, including inappropriate comments to younger female staffers. NANCY SINATRA SR, first wife of Frank Sinatra, dies at 101. ZOMBIELAND 2 is set to begin production with the original cast in January 2019 and will be released in October 2019, in time for the 10th anniversary of the original movie. DIE HARD at 30: Bruce Willis declares that it is not a Christmas movie, but at a roast, so he's clearly trolling. NOT ALL HEROES Wear Capes. A NEWBORN GIRAFFE takes its first steps. A JAGUAR escaped from the roof of its Audubon Zoo enclosure early Saturday morning in New Orleans and made its way through other zoo exhibits, killing six animals and injuring three. AN ORCA saying "hello" like a human.

Three Dog Night, Lori McKenna, Stringer, Big Red Machine, Squirrel |

Friday, July 13, 2018 - 08:00 AM Posted by: Karl

THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:
...with THREE DOG NIGHT! Once again, I'm enjoying the guilty pleasure of enjoying "Eli's Coming" with fellow fans of the late, lamented SportsNight. That, along with memories of The Service's cover of "Shambala" led me to compile a few more, including "Mama Told Me Not to Come," "Joy To The World," "One," "Liar," and "Celebrate." LORI McKENNA advance streams The Tree. NATHAN SALSBURG advance streams Third. STRINGER streams My Bad. BIG RED MACHINE: Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and The National's Aaron Dessner share four new songs. GUIDED BY VOICES shares "You Own The Night." METRIC shares "Dark Saturday." CULTS is covering The Motels' debut LP and share "Total Control" as a teaser. FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE work the car wash for "Denise," whom you may know as T'Pol.DURAN DURAN: Simon Le Bon has denied sexually assaulting a fan, saying her story is "simply untrue". THE BEATLES: Five Myths about the Fab Four. NEIL YOUNG has some bad fans. He even issued a statement. PAUL SIMON is issuing an album of new renditions of songs from across his catalogue, just before his retirement tour ends.
NOW SHOWING: This weekend's wide releases are Hotel Transylvania 3, which is currently scoring 62 percent on the ol' Tomatometer; and Skyscraper, scoring 50 percent. Sorry to Bother You expamds near-wide at 96 percent. MIRA SORVINO has claimed that a casting director gagged her with a condom when she was 16. HENRY CAVILL apologized after coming up against sizable social media criticism for an interview in which he appeared to conflate flirting with rape. DWAYNE "THE ROCK" JOHNSON talks about the birth of his daughter. JOAQUIN PHOENIX & ROONEY MARA are "so in love," but won't marry. I blame the operating system. THE EMMYS nominations are announced. Congrats! And here's The Guardian on the snubs. FWIW, I was a huge fan of Twin Peaks decades ago when it was getting snubbed by the Emmys, and have zero issue with it getting snubbed now. The Showtime series was painful, because David Lynch -- God bless him -- is largely done with any sort of conventional narrative. CHRISTINA APPLEGATE will star in Nteflix's Dead To Me. GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS has an EW First Look. DIE HARD TURNS 30: It's still the gold standard for action movies, in part because it masters the mundane elements other films handle carelessly.
SQUIRREL v RABBIT: Who You Got? CATS detect an earthquake. MALE MICE develop a thicker penis if they grow up around other males, according to scientists at the University of Western Australia. THE SWARM: An 81-year-old man in Texas is thankful to be alive after being stung by hundreds of bees.
