JULIANNE MOORE is in talks to join The Hunger Games franchise. CAMERON DIAZ joins the Annie remake. JAMES WOODS, 66, is dating a 20-year-old. ESCAPE PLAN: Stallone. Schwarzenegger. Sheewiz. ISRAEL: Prime Minister Netanyahu said the IAF has operated in a "number of theaters" over the past year in secret operations. EGYPT: A Muslim Brotherhood spokesman said that if the army and police fail to "properly" respond to attacks against the Brotherhood in upcoming protests, the Brotherhood will "utilize [the] right of self-defense." Human Rights Watch charged the Muslim Brotherhood with promoting sectarian hatred. IRAQ: Insurgents killed 22 Iraqis in a series of bombings in coffee shops and cafes in Baghdad, Baqubah, and Jbela. A MONKEY orders a soda from a vending machine. CAMEL TURDUCKEN: Actually, a camel stuffed with sheep stuffed with chicken stuffed with fish. Your word of the day is "engastration." RARE BIRD, observed getting killed by a wind turbine. A HAWK was rescued from the grill of a minivan.

Wilco, Daughn Gibson, Cheyenne Mize, Summer Songs, Ugly Dogs |

Monday, June 24, 2013 - 08:00 AM Posted by: Karl
WILCO did an all -covers show atth e Solid Sound festival, including Daft Punk's "Get Lucky," Pavement's "Cut Your Hair," and the Replacements' "Color Me Impressed" with a cameo from Tommy Stinson. And here's the audio for their cover of Television's "Marquee Moon." DAUGHN GIBSON advance streams Me Moan. CHEYENNE MIZE advance streams Among The Grey. BASS DRUM OF DEATH is streaming a self-titled album. I was late to this one, but you still have a couple of days. SONGS OF THE SUMMER, 1962-2013: NPR streams a mix. FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE: "Denise," because FoW went down well last Monday. And Jolene Blalock.
NICK CAVE does an Interview with director Andrew Domenik. WAXAHATCHEE: Katie Crutchfield is profiled by Weekend Edition Sunday. LIZ PHAIR: Exile in Guyville turns 20. Gett off my lawn. Really. BLACK SABBATH, ranked by Stereogum. WEEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Monsters University scares up 82 million to top the chart in what is shaping up as a boffo cinema summer. That's about 20 million better than Monsters Inc's Nov. 2001 debut (which should be expected) and better than either Brave or Cars 2, which should ease any anxiety at Pixar (at least until "Planes" lands later this summer, which seems dubious to me). World War Z places with 66 million, the second-biggest second-place ever (just behind The Day After Tomorrow). This was a troubled production but now looks to be a decent hit for Brad Pitt and the undead. Man Of Steel shows with 41.2 million but that 65 percent drop seems a mite steep, even given its lofty opening. This Is The End dropped to No. 4 with 13 million, but that 37 percent drop suggests it played well again this weekend as counter-programming to the bigger pics. Indeed, the same could be said of NowYou See Me, which rounds out the Top 5 with another 7.9 million. MONSTERS UNIVERSITY: Pixar did not mess up its Monsters franchise with this prequel, which is more than you can say for Cars 2. The tale of how Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan became a great scare team was a great deal of fun. It even has some fairly complex things to say about the virtues and limits of the work ethic. I's a bit more emotionally shallow than the origina, but still a very solid effort. WORLD WAR Z: Given its history and deviations from Max Brooks' source material, I had fairly low expectations for this. But WWZ exceeded them easily, which made for a solid double-feature on Saturday. Brad Pitt's characterization is left a bit vague, and we tend to not care about the other characters, but the undead action here is sufficiently sweeping to hold your attention. PAULA DEEN's “n-word” revelations cost her a gig on the Food Network and likely QVC. KIM KARDASHIAN is reportedly obsessed with breastfeeding. Is a West wedding in her future? JAMES GANDOLFINI's body returns to the US tonight. KELLY RUTHERFORD filed for bankruptcy, and it looks like her mega-fight over child custody was her Achilles' heel. ANNA KENDRICK is in talks to play Cinderella in Into the Woods, Disney’s adaptation of the Broadway musical. LIBYA: Two officials of the Libyan National party face blasphemy charges that could lead to the death penalty for publishing certain cartoons during the 2012 elections. SYRIA: The Friends of Syria group pledged to "provide urgently all the necessary materiel and equipment to the opposition on the ground." The group is comprised of Britain, France, the US, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Egypt. A spokesman for the Free Syrian Army said the rebels have recently received new weapons from Arab countries and other friendly nations, but not yet from the United States. IRAQ: A suicide bomber killed 12 people in an attack at a mosque near Taji. Four more Iraqis were killed in a suicide attack in Azba. Twenty-two Iraqis were killed in other attacks by al Qaeda throughout the country. The government allocated 129 million dollars to fund the Awakening. WALLE the BOXER BEAGLE scores an upset win at this year's World's Ugliest Dog competition. THE SKATEBOARDING BULLDOG wins a surfing competition. FLUFFY COWS: Grooming cows so they look like unusually large poodles is a well-known beautification practice in the show cattle industry, but it's just now getting attention on the Internet. MONKEY BITES POLICE OFFICER during a traffic stop.
